What are Deepfakes

Posted on March 16, 2021

Deepfakes are digitally altered images or videos that appear to be real or legitimate. They can be lighthearted or funny in memes, but also have the potential to harm if used to misrepresent or incriminate someone.

A mom was recently accused of creating and sharing deepfakes of her daughter’s cheer squad showing the team “falsely drinking, vaping, or posing nude.” This appears to have been an apparent attempt to get them kicked off of the squad. The images were sent to the team anonymously and traced back to the mom’s IP address. She is facing multiple charges of harassment.
